For generations, Maligomish has been a place where Mi’kmaq families gather, reconnect, celebrate traditions, and strengthen community.
Long before Saint Anne’s Mission Church was built, Maligomish was a place of gathering, ceremony, and connection. Today, the church, Glebe House, cemetery, and surrounding grounds continue to welcome families each year, carrying forward traditions that have endured for generations.
Designated as a Provincially Registered Heritage Property in 1993, Saint Anne’s Mission Church is recognized for representing the long history of Maligomish as the spiritual home of the Mi’kmaq of eastern mainland Nova Scotia.
A Place Built by Community
The current Saint Anne’s Mission Church was completed in 1897 after an earlier church was destroyed by a storm. While local builders led the construction, many members of the congregation worked alongside them, digging the foundation, hauling stone, grading the site, and contributing much of the carpentry work. The church stands today as a testament to generations of community care and commitment.
More than 130 years later, that same spirit of community continues.
Why Restoration Matters
Time, weather, and age have taken their toll on the historic church and Glebe House. Significant restoration work is now needed to preserve these buildings and ensure Maligomish continues to welcome future generations.
Community members, led by long-time advocate Hubert Nicholas, have spent years supporting the research of the site’s history, planning restoration work, pursuing grants, and building partnerships to protect this important place.
The Historic Maligomish Church Preservation Fund was created to complement these efforts by giving individuals, families, businesses, and organizations a meaningful way to contribute through charitable giving.
Together, grants, partnerships, and community support will help move the restoration forward.
